Beta Sigma Phis
Have a Heart for Others ! |
Especially close to the hearts of Kappa Mu members is the chapter's primary service project - The Children's Tumor Foundation. (Just click on this link to learn more!)
Members became aware of neurofibromatosis through a Beta Sigma Phi legacy member's struggle with the disorder. Our legacy member, who is in elementary school, is one of more than 2 million victims worldwide. This makes NF more prevalent than cystic fibrosis, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and Huntington's Disease combined. For us, brave little Catherine puts a very personal face on the challenges faced by NF victims. Neurofibromatosis encompasses a set of distinct genetic disorders that causes tumors to grow along various types of nerves. NF can also affect the development of non-nervous tissues such as bones and skin. Neurofibromatosis causes tumors to grow anywhere on or in the body. Due to related medical issues, NF research may also benefit an additional 100 million Americans (i.e. 65 million with cancer and 35 million with learning disabilities). Kappa Mu Chapter, in concert with state of Georgia Beta Sigma Phi chapters and the Atlanta City Council, petitioned Beta Sigma Phi's International Office for inclusion of The Children's Tumor Foundation as a recipient of Beta Sigma Phi financial support through the International Endowment Fund. Kappa Mu is pleased to report that $15,000 was committed to this cause over a 3 year period by Beta Sigma Phi. Kappa Mu chapter also helps raise money for NF research through personal contributions, participation in the "NF Walk" in Atlanta's Piedmont Park in October, support for "Cupid's Undie Run" in February and the NF event "Racing for Research". Since becoming involved with support for NF, sorority members have learned that some of their sister members of Beta Sigma Phi were diagnosed with this disorder and will benefit from the research and support provided through The Children's Tumor Foundation. |
